Maslen Maltese is a small hobby show kennel of Maltese dogs based in Miami, FL and Baton Rouge, LA.

My name is Helen Mason. I am originally from Baton Rouge, LA.  I graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences in 2006. While in college, I did an exchange program during my junior year during which I attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After college, I took a couple years off from school during which I got involved in real estate. I decided to further my education by attending law school at the University of Miami School of Law from which I obtained a Juris Doctorate degree and a Master of Law in Real Property Development. I graduated with honors and managed to have two papers published as well as be a contributor to a treatise on Green Building. I am a Florida licensed attorney and real estate sales associate.

I have always been an animal lover, and I have always had an interest in showing dogs. However, when I was younger, my parents would not let me try. I obtained my first Maltese and first show dog, Daisy, in 2005 while I was still in college. We moved back to Hawaii for a little while after I finished college which is where I first starting showing her. Our first show was a complete disaster! I was confused about the whole picking up your number before the ring and Daisy would not walk at all in the grass! So, I decided to we needed to kick it into high gear to get this show thing down. Daisy and I started going to show training classes three times a week. At the classes, I met a very nice lady who bred and showed maltese and Cavaliers with her husband. She was kind enough to help me with the grooming which was another skill I was lacking. By our next show, we were doing a bit better-for example, my dog would now walk in the grass! Haha! It has been a long learning process, but I have enjoyed it all, and I truly enjoy being with all the dogs at a show.

In my breeding program, I strive to breed healthy maltese with great temperaments as I feel these are the most important aspects of these companion dogs. I also have a preference for smarter, more trainable dogs. Then, I strive to breed a dog that has balanced movement with its reach and drive and can hold a level top line. I strive to breed for symmetry to the outline that makes it pleasing to the eye. And, the finishing touches are a striking white silky coats, pretty heads with a gentle, alert expression and inky black pigment.
